The Quality Management Unit (QMU) of the Regional Directorate of Health Services (RDHS) – Hambantota is dedicated to strengthening the overall quality, safety, and efficiency of healthcare delivery across all institutions within the district. The unit provides strategic leadership, technical guidance, and continuous monitoring to ensure that health facilities adhere to nationally recognized standards and deliver patient-centered, equitable, and accountable services.
The QMU oversees the implementation of quality improvement frameworks, including the National Quality Assurance Programme, 5S–Kaizen–TQM practices, patient safety initiatives, and clinical governance activities. Through regular assessments, supervisory visits, audits, and performance reviews, the unit works closely with hospitals and peripheral health institutions to identify gaps, introduce evidence-based solutions, and promote a culture of continuous improvement.
Key responsibilities of the unit include developing quality improvement plans, coordinating staff training and capacity-building programmes, monitoring clinical and non-clinical indicators, supporting accreditation processes, and ensuring compliance with infection prevention and control standards. The QMU also facilitates patient satisfaction assessments, incident reporting mechanisms, and corrective action planning, ensuring that healthcare services within the district remain safe, responsive, and aligned with community needs.
By fostering collaboration among healthcare teams, enhancing staff competencies, and promoting innovation at the institutional level, the Quality Management Unit plays a vital role in strengthening the health system of Hambantota and delivering high-quality care to the public.
