The health system of the district consists of both government and private sector participation. The government sector provides services in both Western and Ayurvedic health care systems.

Government health services are delivered through curative and preventive institutions. The district has one District General Hospital under the Line Ministry, one Type A Base Hospital (Tangalle Base Hospital), and two Type B Base Hospitals (Tissamaharama and Walasmulla Base Hospitals). In addition, there are 17 Divisional Hospitals14 Primary Care Units11 School Dental Clinics, and 4 Special Campaigns (Chest Clinic, STD/AIDS Clinic, Leprosy Campaign, and Malaria Campaign).

The preventive health sector consists of 12 MOH Offices.

The private health sector mainly provides outpatient, laboratory, and other diagnostic services. Hambantota District has only a few private hospitals offering inward treatment facilities.

Traditional Ayurvedic medicine is well integrated into the overall health care system.

Except for the District General Hospital, all other curative and preventive health institutions come under the Provincial Council, coordinated by the Regional Director of Health Services Office and the Provincial Director of Health Services Office.
